Payments & Fees

Unless payment is made in cash at the office, all payments will be processed online through the client portal or via a secure LawPay link provided by the office. If you need assistance making a payment, our staff can take your credit or e-check over the phone. Also please note that our new retainer agreements and engagement letters have been updated to require a payment method on file during the course of representation.

Engagement Agreements & Fees

In order to ensure that all clients understand the scope of representation, we require that all clients have a written engagement letter or retainer agreement, as well as a payment method on file. For simple matters or frequent clients, the engagement could be in the form of an email agreeing on terms. However, most clients will receive an invitation to review and sign a more formal engagement letter or retainer agreement via our client portal. Please note that your representation by this office is not final until we have both agreed to the terms of representation, and payment has been made.

Flat Fees

We believe in transparency and honesty when it comes to attorney fees. Whenever possible, we will discuss and scope your project or legal issue. In some cases, we may limit the engagement in order to propose a flat fee that covers certain aspects of your case. In other matters, we may be able to handle all aspects of a case for a flat fee.  This allows our clients to know exactly what they will be paying upfront and avoid any surprises down the road. However, please note that flat fees never include trial or appeals.

Hourly Fees

Due to the unpredictable nature of contentious matters, it is not always possible to work on flat fees. In these situations, we offer hourly fee agreements. We will also consider variables such as household size, income, and project requirements, as well as your financial situation or the fiscal reality of your business, nonprofit, or municipality.

Retainers / Subscription Fees

We offer flexible attorney retainer fees to meet your specific legal needs. Whether you need in-depth consulting or longer-term access to legal services, such as outside general counsel services, we can offer a monthly retainer agreement or subscription fee that will work for you. These options give you access to a minimum number of hours each month, ensuring that you always have the legal support you need.

Pro Bono / Low Bono Services

We understand that legal services can be costly, which is why we also provide pro bono and low bono services in certain situations. Our attorneys also serve on both the Tompkins and Cayuga County’s Assigned Counsel Panels, providing criminal and family indigent legal services.
